La Crosse Center Parking Expansion & Skywalk
|
150,000 square feet
C.D. Smith Construction provided general contractor services to the City of La Crosse in the construction of a two-story addition to the La Crosse Center Parking Ramp and the addition of a skywalk. The skywalk connects the now, five-story ramp to the La Crosse Center, La Crosse’s 100,000 square foot convention center. The ramp which previously had a capacity of three levels and 567 spaces, was increased to 5 levels and 922 parking spaces.
The ramp construction included the addition of pre-cast panels, stairwells on all four corners and windows so the stairs remain visible from the street, thereby increasing user safety. In addition a brick veneer was added to the ends of the ramp, matching the façade of the La Crosse Center’s architecture. Construction finishes included two elevators, new lighting for all levels, an emergency generator, new signs and snow chutes to move snowfall from the top floor.
The skywalk was not initially part of the project, but later approved by the La Crosse Common Council during construction of the ramp. City leaders felt that the skywalk was necessary to remain competitive with other convention centers. The skywalk allows patrons of the convention center and other event attendee safe access from parking to the center without ever going outside. In addition, the skywalk allows the connection of both the Radisson and Holiday Inn Hotel to the conference center.
The La Crosse Center Parking Ramp and Skyway project is a critical part of La Crosse’s downtown revitalization efforts. It will provide both short and long-term economic benefits and ensures that La Crosse remains a competitive and viable option for companies and visitors. Finally, it provides the La Crosse community with a safe and effective alternative for the downtown parking shortage and encourages further business development and growth.
